(Excerpt) Interview with Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Reading and learning the braille system through a very common and friendly material: textile .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : I wanted to design something for people with visual problems and make a textile with a social meaning. A fabric that could be produced inssutrially and massively. An occidental universal textile. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : To contact entities for blinded people in order to make projects with this textile. Provide these organizations with a tool to teach the system and open an opportunity to learn with new materials. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : It tooked me months, almost a year because I made a first protoype and the only propperty was the difference of textures between the yarns in the cells and in the back. After months I learnt and apply by a research of my own a new technique which finally could give the circles a volume that really could be different from the plain surface. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : I pursuit the idea of creating something that besides being commercial or not, something with a real meaning and challenging. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : My designed was made in a textile Mill as a personal project. I am planning that organizations contact me fot campaigns or new developments social and commercial. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : evolution of my career and always new challenges .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : No .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : people with vision problems and blindsight through ONG organizations .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : because it is new, fresh, social plus it contains good aesthetics .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Braille wikipedia defnition says: "It is a is a tactile writing system used by the blind and the visually impaired" .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : yarns, looms, CAD Software and a lot of patience. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : that it really works and one day you can have 150 meters of this fabric woven. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Nobody. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Everything has to do with techonology about this design. You cannot mad it without it. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Cristina Orozco Cuevas : Yes, i ts influenced by doing some research of braille language, how the cells and points work as a code and how when you combine some codes form numbers or capital letters. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?.
